ABSTRACT

A ‘core’, or BASIC VOCABULARY is often distinguished from more specialised words and phrases. All languages are ever-changing and variable in different communicative contexts, thus it is convenient to subdivide their vocabularies along such dimensions as DIALECT, IDIOLECT or SUBJECT FIELD, and compile reference works for these varieties. The specialisation of vocabulary for different uses is potentially infinite, but science and technology (TERMINOLOGY), and certain areas of popular social interest, e.g. politics, religion, or sex, are often singled out for lexical treatment in reference works.
