ABSTRACT
The earliest writing in Latvian, in an orthography based on German, appeared in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The first Bible translation dates from the eighteenth century. By the 1890s a standardized literary language had taken shape, which went on to flourish in the brief period of independence, 1918-40.
