ABSTRACT
Early in the twentieth century a new influenza washed over the world in three waves, alien to the immune systems of everyone. Such an unrecognisable virus, it went unchallenged by the sentries of the human immune system and claimed one of the greatest death tolls in recorded history. The first decades of HIV/AIDS have yet to slay the vast masses that influenza slaughtered in a year.
