ABSTRACT

The individual performance standards that were discussed in Unit 94 were all quantitative. In measuring an individual’s performance, however, qualitative standards should also be used or developed for assessment purposes. These are more difficult to develop, but should be used in job appraisal and formal performance reviews. For example, the museum’s learning services manager may be asked to organise and run six in-service training courses for schoolteachers each year. This is a quantitative standard. An associated qualitative standard might be to ensure that each teacher attending the courses was satisfied with the arrangements, found the course content relevant to their work and planned to attend future training events organised by the museum. A questionnaire for each participant could be used to determine how well the courses had met these expectations. The results could then be used in turn to help assess the performance of the learning services manager in meeting that standard.
