ABSTRACT

There are many ways in which museums prevent people from visiting them. This Unit looks at some of the barriers museums unconsciously erect against visitors, and at ways we can knock them down again.

❚ ‘IT’S NOT FOR PEOPLE LIKE US.’ One of the main reasons that people do not visit museums is that they think they will not feel comfortable there. Sometimes, indeed, the idea of visiting a museum may not even have occurred to them. In almost every country, museum-going tends to be an activity of the better-educated and better-off.
