ABSTRACT

As technology develops, museums are faced with more and more difficult decisions on which technology to adopt. At the time of writing, digital cameras are replacing film cameras very fast, and they mean that images can be easily edited, put onto the Internet, incorporated into the museum’s documentation, incorporated into computer-driven audio-visual displays, and sent by e-mail. But using digital technology means that the museum must be able to rely on always – long into the future – having easy access to computers on which to store the images, and the resources always to be able to transfer files as technology changes. Many museums will not be confident of always having these resources. The advice must be to use the technology for which resources are easily available locally.
