ABSTRACT
All types of museum collections have a vital role to play in research. Indeed, one of the primary justifications for collecting material for museum collections is that it forms a permanent body of research material for future generations. Hence it is of critical importance that collecting is not carried out in an arbitrary or aimless way. It must be done within the framework of a carefully considered collecting and disposal policy and through well-organised collecting programmes.
