ABSTRACT

New building developments, for example new museums or new museum buildings, should go through two broad stages of assessment – options analysis and feasibility assessment. Major capital expenditure decisions made by the museum’s governing body need to be defensible and robust, not least because they are likely to need to pass muster with external funding agencies. Options analysis helps to show that a range of options has been considered in terms of their costs and benefits and that a preferred option has been arrived at through detailed appraisal and evaluation.
