ABSTRACT

Impacts can be positive or negative; short term or long term; one-off or ongoing; increasing or decreasing; or be cyclical or random. A museum can impact on many different types of organisation and on many different types of social groups. Positive impacts might be where a museum is able to generate new employment both onsite and off-site within the local economy through attracting more visitors or where a new museum development helps in regeneration terms to increase property values in the wider destination in which it is set. Negative impact might be where a new museum development displaces the audiences from existing museums by increasing competition between them or helps to increase property values in a destination out of reach of local markets.
