They had started early, a dozen people on the trail keeping time with their stock. A skein of mist clung to the trees behind them in the valley; the breath of the cattle hung in the air on either side of their path. For three days they had walked from the lodge by the river, where pigs turned roots and meat dried in the smoke. It would have been two, but there had been a meeting with cousins from the next valley. The sharing of food and talk had added to the walk.
