ABSTRACT
The custom of celebrating festive occasions by wearing decorated clothes was practised in the pre-Islamic period in Mecca. Ibn Hishām and al-Wāqidī say that the people of Mecca used to borrow their jewellery from the Jewish family of merchants al-Huqayq in order to decorate themselves at weddings and other festive occasions.
