ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines eighteen techniques to help clients build coping skills to tolerate and manage distress. These techniques are optional in the practice of HR and are offered as adjunctive tools. Some clients may only require one or two of the techniques while others may benefit from several. The techniques cover skills for relaxation, identifying, tolerating and shifting feelings, and building emotional resilience. They may be taught during a course of individual therapy or they can be taught in a separate stress management group. Mastery of the skills provides a foundation for proceeding with the emotional work of HR therapy.
