Ideally, punctuation should be based on sound logical principles. But be careful:

do not try to force your punctuation practice into a format that defies current usage.

One modern school of thought says: the less punctuation the better. And it is certainly true that there is less punctuation than there used to be, for all sorts of reasons: sentences are shorter so they need fewer intermediate stops; as abbreviations become familiar they no longer need to be marked as such; designers dislike dots … But be careful: don’t be ultra-modern or you risk confusing your reader.
