ABSTRACT
The purpose of this chapter is to draw lessons from the UK experience of equal pay legislation. The lessons are primarily negative in the sense of a general recognition of how ineffective has been the UK example - in other words, it shows how not to proceed. The first section reviews some of the literature on comparable worth in order to bring out the analytical issues involved. This is followed by a section on the relationship between collective bargaining and equal pay. The final section draws some general conclusions from the experience of the legislation, making some suggestions on how legislation might be introduced to be as effective as possible.
