Here it is: I want you to take a seven-year no-writing-vow beginning on your sixtysecond birthday, January 18, 2004. You’ve taken many vows before and seen their effectiveness. Although I realize this will be difficult for you because you do love to write, please think back to that sevenyear no-interview-vow you took and remember how effective that was? Right? So don’t panic. I guarantee it will be OK! Your life will definitely be different because you won’t be able to go to India and write your novel about an American performance artist who becomes a sadhu. Maybe in seven years you can go. Maybe not.
