ABSTRACT
The Golden Age beauty of pre-destruction Thera was often recalled in later Greek legends. Herodotus gave it the name Kallisti, ‘Fairest One.’ Writing in 440 BC , Herodotus was passing on a tradition that may have been transmitted orally for a thousand years.1 Herodotus indicates that in his time the island was remembered as having once been fertile and beautiful, unlike the ravaged crater we now see.
