The Chinese economy has not suffered from the financial crisis that has afflicted many economies in the East Asia region. This chapter examines the characteristics of China’s economy which prevented it from sharing the damage experienced by the countries in crisis. The chapter goes on to identify the systemic weaknesses that remain in China’s economy, then suggests directions the ongoing reform of China’s economy will need to take if growth is to continue and exposure to any future crisis is to be avoided.
