ABSTRACT
In 1990 East Germany was united with a West Germany that had already become the biggest economic power in Europe. In area, however, the new united Germany was smaller than the Germany of 1937. The Nazi regime that held power from 1933 to 1945 had led Germany into a series of annexations and wars of conquest which, in the end, left it smaller, divided, and with hardly any contact between the two parts.
