ABSTRACT
In 1996 Spain put pressure on Gibraltar by obstructing frontier crossings. It was copying the tactics previously used, without success, by General Francisco Franco, who, after starting an army mutiny and winning the subsequent 1936-39 civil war with the help of German and Italian forces, had ruled Spain for 36 years.
