ABSTRACT

In 1940 they entered French Indochina (now Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia). In 1941 they occupied Thailand, and by mid-1942, after attacking all the American, British and Dutch territories in the region, the Japanese were in control of the Philippines, Guam and Wake Island; Hong Kong, Malaya, Singapore, British Borneo and most of Burma; all the Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia); much of New Guinea, most of the Solomons and all the Gilbert Islands; and, far to the north, the western Aleutians.
