ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the typical questions that soon to be newly qualified teachers ask as they launch themselves into their hunt for employment. If they know the area or school that they want to work in, send in their CV and a covering letter as a speculative application. The biggest consideration when thinking about working in the independent sector is whether or not teachers would be able to complete their induction period in a particular school. Often schools and local education authorities are specific about who they want them to put down as a referee. Usually this will be someone who knows them as a person or in a professional capacity and someone who can comment on their work as a teacher. Portfolios are an excellent way of demonstrating teacher’s skills, experiences and achievements in a tangible and visual way.
