ABSTRACT
This chapter looks at some of the main hot topics that are likely to encounter in first few years in the profession. One key thing to keep in mind is that just about every initiative or new idea that one may have to get to grips with will be geared towards raising standards of achievement. Some will be top-down initiatives and some will be grassroots movements, but the overall goals are usually to improve the standards of attainment of the children in our schools. SchoolsWeb Locate is an online directory which carries a huge amount of information on schools-related topics found on DfES websites. The print media carry education news stories and some carry education supplements on certain days of the week. Extended schools are described on the remodelling website as schools which provide 'a range of services and activities often beyond the school day to help meet the needs of its pupils, their families and the wider community'.
