ABSTRACT

This chapter looks at some of the more common issues raised by new teachers regarding the behaviour of those they teach. Whether it is real or imagined, some areas of the media would certainly have believed that the behaviour of pupils and students in schools is heading towards anarchy! Despite the fact that Ofsted finds that behaviour in many schools is absolutely no cause for concern, there does seem to be a pervading belief that behaviour has taken a turn for the worse. Something to consider when thinking about behaviour management is that the simple act of acknowledging with pupils what is going on for them can help to diffuse a good deal of tension. The key is to pre-empt behaviour difficulties as far as possible, and to deal with them efficiently and effectively if or when they do arise.
