ABSTRACT

Paeonius (C5 bc) A sculptor from Mende in Thrace. His only known work, which dates from c.420, is a marble statue of a flying Victory supported on a high triangular base, found at Olympia to the east of the temple of Zeus. The inscription on the base states Paeonius as the sculptor and that the dedication was made by the Messenians of Naupactus. It also tells us that he made the acroteria for the temple of Zeus. pausanias (3)’s Description of Greece (5. 26) recalls that the Messenians believed that the statue commemorated the defeat of the Spartans at Sphacteria in 425.
