ABSTRACT

Let us journey back in time . . . Approximately 3500 to 2800 million years ago single cell organ-

isms appeared on earth. Multicellular organisms developed 1500 to 600 million years ago – more than half-way through the history of life on earth. Microorganisms dominated the first 85 per cent of life on earth. Multicellularity probably evolved as an ‘anti-predator strategy’ (Stearns and Hoekstra 2000). Predation pressure – or natural selection involving survival despite predators – has fuelled the development of anti-predator strategies.
