ABSTRACT

Thi s chapter deals w i t h lexical items which l ink and establish a relationship between clauses o r elements w i t h i n a clause. The term 'conjunct ion ' is applied rather loosely to this whole category, which includes words or phrases that might more appropriately be cal led adverbs o r particles. M o d e r n grammar distinguishes between conjunctions, complementizers, and subordinators in analysing their relevance to the functions o f coordina t ion and subordinat ion in complex sentences. Here we describe ind iv idua l items, retaining the broad d iv i s ion between coordinat ing conjunctions (15.1), and complementizers (15.2-4). Subord ina t ing conjunctions are treated in the chapters o n adverbial clauses (Chapter 33) and condi t ionals (Chapter 34).
