Cata l an displays the phenomenon o f grammatical gender agreement found i n many European languages (and elsewhere). Every noun is either o f masculine or o f feminine gender; adjectives which modi fy the noun , as well as pronouns which cross-refer to it, are required to take the same, 'agreeing', gender. Fo r example:

Aquell armari veil era pie, i el vam haver de that (m.) cupboa rd (m.) o ld (m.) was full (m.), and it (m.) we-had to

buidar. empty
