ABSTRACT

The debate over the contributions of multinational corporations to economic growth and development in LDCs arises from several sources. The arguments may be classified under (a) dispute over relevant theory, (b) dispute over interpretations of evidence, and (c) policy design. These underlying elements of the debate are not usually separated in arguments frequently encountered in the literature on multinational corporations. Rather they tend to go together. The focus of this book has been to sort out disputes over MNCs mainly on the basis of relevant economic theory and interpretations of available evidence. The third part of the debate, that is, policy design, will be taken up towards the end of this chapter, but first, a summary of the substantive arguments developed in Chapters 26.
