ABSTRACT
I shall discuss two apparently conflicting views about our use of natural language. The first view, that language is used primarily in thought, has rarely been given explicit formulation but may be associated with the theories of Noam Chomsky, W. V. Quine, and Wilfrid Sellars. The second view, that language is used primarily in communication, has been explicitly put forward by J. A. Fodor and J. J. Katz and may also be associated (I think) with the theories of Paul Ziff and Donald Davidson. I shall describe each view and then try to say where I think the truth lies.
