ABSTRACT

Reciprocal teaching involves teaching learners, by means of guided practice, how to improve their reading comprehension, in all subject areas, by predicting, clarifying, questioning and summarizing what is in a text. It takes place in a dialogue between an educator and learners, in which the educator models and explains in the early stages and gradually passes more and more responsibility to the learners as they become more competent. Reciprocal teaching is an example of the cognitive strategy instruction techniques discussed in Strategy 11. It is relevant for many subjects, including social studies, science, the languages, as well as reading.
