ABSTRACT

When a miracle story claims that a god or a hero controls nature, what set of meanings for it was available to the ordinary person in Greco-Roman antiquity? These selected texts center on four major nature miracles of the Jesus tradition: a. the stilling of the storm, b. the walking on the water, c. the changing of water into wine and d. the multiplication of food. In this part, each of the four nature miracles will be treated in turn, first with the gods and then with the heroes who were commonly associated with such a feat.
