ABSTRACT

The most well-known and concise analysis of public administration is Max Weber’s theory of authority or legitimate domination. It comes in two versions, both reprinted in his Economy and Society (1978). Thus, there is one short version and another long version, both eminently worth reading and both adhering to the special Weber style of arguing, i.e. a parsimonious set of ideal-types as theory, and collecting around these pure models massive empirical information about rulerships in various civilisations.
