ABSTRACT
Tributes to Godfrey Lienhardt, who died in Oxford on 9 November [1993] at the age of 72, and particularly to his study of Dinka religion, have gone on to emphasise his personal qualities, especially his remarkable gift for friendship and his dedication to the peoples of the Sudan. My task is to review the scholarly achievement.
