ABSTRACT

This interest in criminality has existed throughout history. The briefest scan of the history of literature reveals the central role played by crime and criminals – from the Greek tragedies to Shakespeare’s Hamlet, to Bill Sykes in Charles Dickens’s Oliver Twist, to George Orwell’s Nineteen Eighty-four. Dostoyevsky’s Crime and Punishment is a classic work of criminal psychology, while the New Testament story of Jesus tells of wrongful accusation, arrest, trial, conviction and execution.
