ABSTRACT
China puzzles us by her resilience in spite of a long history that has been full of shocks and disasters, both natural and man-made: periodic droughts and floods, internal riots, potential and actual foreign invasions and occasional alien conquests. Despite so much misfortune, China revived time and again from the ashes like a phoenix.
