ABSTRACT

Rumors spread quickly through a small Midwestern community: the Japanese are coming. Older residents who remember World War II may regret the invasion: ‘We won the war and lost the peace.’ Some veterans protested when the Subaru-Isuzu plant in Lafayette, Indiana, was situated on the Bataan Memorial Highway. Younger residents welcome the job opportunities: ‘We don’t care if the plant is run by green, three-eyed Martians, as long as it means jobs for us.’ Facts are scarce; the only concrete evidence may be when a group of foreign-looking individuals get out of a limousine and walk along Main Street holding video cameras.
