ABSTRACT

Communication in schools is an extremely complex topic. A thorough coverage of it would deal with everything from policy-making at senior management level to individual job descriptions for each staff member, taking in the school, departmental and team communication systems along the way. It might include formal and informal interviews with staff, pupils, parents and others and would have to look at types, patterns and the content of communication. It would certainly include a discussion of staff handbooks, handbooks for parents, reports and other communications with the wider community. Such an exhaustive analysis of the topic of communication is beyond our scope here. Instead, it is proposed to examine briefly those factors which will tend to inhibit or facilitate communication within schools and to consider those types of communication which are especially relevant to teachers working together in teams within those schools.
