ABSTRACT
In Knights 542-3, Aristophanes chooses to define as a period of apprenticeship the activity which pre-dates the Lenaian contest of 424, in which he made his official début with Knights. The import of this apprenticeship, during which the author did not present his comedies personally, is discussed briefly in section 6 of this chapter.
