ABSTRACT
It has often been claimed that composition cannot be taught. While it is true that no teacher can endow the student with musical talent and imagination, good teachers can provide a stimulating environment in which creativity can flourish. This is best done within an institution that has the resources to provide opportunities for listening to and studying new music, as well as by providing performers (both professionals and students) who are willing and able to rehearse emerging composers" works.
