ABSTRACT

The following study presents multilateral diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing violent conflict in Tajikistan and encourage peace-building. Conflict resolution and promoting government reforms are offered by the United Nations (UN) and the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).2 They work to mediate a political solution to the Tajik conflict and encourage the development of democratic institutions. Both organisations have tried, with mixed results, to advance a peace-building process and influence the political and military authorities in Tajikistan. Other participants in this diplomatic effort are Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and members of the Iranian, Afghan and Pakistani governments.
