ABSTRACT
Although an analysis of political discourse in the English language is beyond the scope of this study, it would be interesting to see whether similar relationships exist between language functions and variation in language form -given the linguistic and paralinguistic properties of the English language. This chapter does not aim to be a detailed analysis of English oratory; rather one uses Gumperz's examples (see below) to point out the linguistic and functional similarities between English and Arabic political speeches.
