ABSTRACT

INTRODUCTION Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Jericho, Nazareth, Capernaum, Caesarea, Joppa, Antioch and Damascus - all are familiar names to Christians of all traditions, even if many may have problems in locating them accurately on a map. Even without the background of the Old Testament record, the New Testament itself is replete with references to these and other locations in Palestine and Syria. We are equally familiar with the fact that organized Christianity had its origins in this area, as Jesus' followers 'filled with power' became his witnesses 'in Jerusalem, in allJudea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth' (Acts 1:8).
