ABSTRACT

Theprecedingchapterhasshownthatacharacteristicnunneryarchitecture wasgender-specific,yetwithintherulesofmonasticplanning.Anaspect ofthisarchitecturalvocabularywasthehighincidenceofunorthodox cloisterorientation,inwhichnunnerycloisterswereplacedtothenorthof thechurchinadeviationfromthestandardmonasticplan.Possible meaningsofthispatterncanbeexploredaccordingtotheiconographyof medievalnunneryarchitecture.
