ABSTRACT

Teachers have made many recommendations for the improvement of the management and administrative systems of their schools and of the services provided by their LEAs. Their main proposals are: effective selection procedures; induction programmes for all staff; the expansion of staff development and management-training opportunities; more support from their colleagues and more effective management of meetings, teamwork, curricular and organizational change, pupil behaviour and stress reduction programmes. These items will therefore provide the frame of reference for my discussion in this chapter of the actions to be taken to strengthen organizational resources. I will also emphasize the importance of appraisal for stress management. The first concern to be considered is the improvement of staff selection.
