ABSTRACT

The Reform Act provided the biggest package of initiatives in the 1980s and arguably ‘the biggest single change in education this century’ (Wragg 1990). Some details of these developments were given by the headteacher of a primary school who was a member of one of my recent stress management workshops. She wrote:

The major pressures are the increasing complexity and accountability of the job, e.g. coping with the Local Management of Schools, the National Curriculum, etc. There is a lack of time for planning and discussion in order to prepare for their implementation. There is the additional pressure of formulating an Institutional Development Plan by the end of this term. I see this as a large undertaking especially as the English curriculum document has not arrived for consultation yet.
