ABSTRACT
By 1993, the NMSP was coming under increasing pressure from the Thai security establishment to agree a ceasefire with the SLORC, thus clearing the way for the exploitation of gas deposits and other natural resources in the Mon homelands. This pressure came in a number of forms, including restrictions on the movement and activities of NMSP personnel in Thailand, continued harassment of the refugees and Mon illegal immigrants in the kingdom, and a general tightening of security measures along the border.
