ABSTRACT

In July 1996, a year and a month after the ceasefire, The Nation reported a "senior NMSP leader" (probably Nai Rot Sah) confirming that the agreement had come about primarily due to pressure from the Thai military. The interviewee was anxious to contradict any suggestion that the Mon nationalists might view the post-ceasefire situation in a positive light. He pointed out that human rights were still being regularly abused across Mon State, and in particular denied that Nai Shwe Kyin was enthusiastic about future prospects: the NMSP President hoped for the best, "but is prepared for the worst.
