ABSTRACT

For China, the fulfilment of the World Trade Organization (WTO) obligations will lead to substantial cuts in tariff and non-tariff barriers and the opening up of its service sector to foreign direct investment (FDI). WTO accession will induce structural changes in China's foreign trade and capital inflows. In order to investigate how these expected changes may influence the evolution of EU-China relations, this study provides an in-depth analysis of EU-China trade patterns in the 1990s which highlights their current determinants.
