THEmostbeautifultempleinallEgyptistheonewhich SethyIoftheXIXthdynastybuiltfortheworshipofhis ancestors.Theplanispeculiar,andisprobablydueto thefactthatanundergroundspringofwatermadethe foundationsunsafe;thisspringwasafterwardsenclosed bythebuildingnowknownastheOsireion.Theinsecurity ofthegroundforcedachangeofplanuponthearchitect; andthechamberswhichshouldnormallybeattheback of,orround,thesanctuarywereputtotheside.The ground-planisthereforelikeacapitalLinshape,thehead oftheLpointingtothenorth,andthebaserunningeast andwest.Anotherpeculiarityofthetempleisthat, insteadofonlyoneshrinetothegodorgodsofthetemple, thereareseven;theseare,however,morecorrectly describedaschapelsratherthanshrines.Thededications inorderfromeasttowestaretotheKing,Ptah,Harakhti, Amon,Osiris,Isis,andHorus.
