ofthecityofThebeswhichwascalledAsher{N).The goddesswasprobablytheoriginaldeityofThebes,and inherhumanformispossiblythepersonificationofthe CrownofUpperEgypt.Inanimalformsheisthevulture, which,asahieroglyphicsign,means"Mother".Inall periodsthesymbolismofthemother-birdwithwings outspreadoveritsfledglingshasappealedtoallnations, andthevulture,beingthelargestbirdinEgyptand havingthelargestspreadofwing,becameinthatcountry thesymbolofmotherhoodandmaternalprotection.The royalinsigniaofthequeensofEgyptincludedthevulture head-dress,andfromtheearliesthistoricaltimesthe vultureisrepresentedwithoutspreadwingsabovethe headoftheking.
